HOUSING: CAN I AFFORD MY MORTGAGE?

The Fidelity Research Institute: Promoting a Lie

Cities afraid of death by congestion from the USA TODAY,
reports that political and business leaders in metro areas increasingly view traffic congestion as hurting their ability to compete with other regions for new business and young professionals. As a result, some major cities such as Phoenix are looking at speeding up major freeway projects, such as widening Interstate 10 between the US 60 and SR 143 from 14 to 24 lanes to ease the kind of gridlock that some planners say could stunt economic growth. "The Phoenix metro area is growing like crazy," said Eric Anderson, transportation director for the Maricopa Association of Governments, the regional agency that coordinates freeway construction projects. "We're adding about 125,000 people a year, and we have a population approaching 4 million." The Interstate 10 widening projects is one of several large highway projects across the nation in major cities. The article cites Atlanta, which competes with Phoenix for population and jobs, as having more concerns about traffic congestion than Phoenix.
